Selecting Healthy Treats

Why are artificial preservatives being used?

*Stops the fat from going rancid
*Allows longer shelf life
*Less expensive to use

Let's look at a few of the more popular preservatives and find out why we should not use them:

*BHA & BHT
These two preservatives have been linked to liver and kidney problems, birth defects, slow growth rates, behavioral problems, metabolic stress, increases in cholesterol levels, allergic reactions, baldness and brain defects in laboratory animals. What could it be doing to our pets?
*MSG
MSG is a flavor enhancer and preservative that most Chinese restaurants use in their food. So what's the big deal? Well ask people who experience migraines after ingesting MSG. Some people experience tingling sensations in their fingers after eating food cooked in MSG.
*SODIUM METABISULPHITE
This is also a preservative used in pet foods. In humans, this chemical has caused weakness, difficulty in swallowing, loss of consciousness and brain damage.
*SUGAR
Semi moist dog foods contain sugar. There can be as much as 25% sugar in some forms (sucrose, caramel or corn syrup). This keeps the food moist. Dogs actually become addicted to sugar. We are now seeing in record numbers dogs developing diabetes. What else can be attributed to sugar? How about hypoglycemia, obesity, nervousness, cataracts, tooth decay, arthritis and allergies. Sugar can also drain vitamins and minerals from the body. Sugar forms has caused unexplained irregularities in the red blood cells of cats. For dogs it can cause skin problems, hair loss, dull coats, diarrhea, overweight and even death. Propylene glycol is a chemical that is used in antifreeze, oil and waxes. Cats can actually become addicted to food that contains this preservative.
*ETHOXYQUIN
The FDA (USA) and some of the large pet food companies say that Ethoxyquin is safe for pet food. But some would disagree, blaming this preservative on chronic maladies that have been affecting purebred dogs at alarming frequency. There has been a severe increase in immune related diseases among pets, directly related to pet foods preserved with Ethoxyquin. Other problems that are arising are itchy skin, lethargy, hair loss, thyroid problems, reproductive disorders, birth defects and cancer. The chemical was developed by a company as a rubber hardener. It is also used as a herbicide and insecticide (anti-scale agent) for apples and pears. IS IT SAFE? THERE IS NO REAL EVIDENCE THAT ETHOXYQUIN IS SAFE.
